The Seminar will revolve around the shifting dynamics of infrastructure development in Asia, with a primary focus on the contrasting roles of Japan and China. Professor Inada will trace the realities of Japan's involvement in Asian infrastructure, juxtaposed against China's significant rise, particularly following the initiation of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2013. The presentation will delve into the challenges posed by Chinese projects, spotlighting issues of “quality infrastructure” such as transparency, accountability, social and environmental considerations, using specific case studies from Timor Leste, Cambodia, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.

Professor Inada will also analyze the debt-related complications associated with China's infrastructure investments. The webinar will conclude by examining the broader implications of China's ascent on the international development finance regime, offering a comprehensive understanding of the evolving dynamics in the Asian infrastructure landscape.
